Spring is in the air in and it is only August!
Written by Nicole Wakeford
Spring seems to have arrived early this year in more ways than one: The sausage trees are flowering, days have been warm and White Elephant has a number of new babies. Two very inquisitive hyena cubs provide wonderful viewing. Mom sits back while the playful cubs attack blades of grass and each other. The cubs are most curios about the game drive vehicles and often come up close for a better sniff.
Our ‘orphan’ herd of elephants also has a new arrival. Constance is the proud and overly protective mom of a little male thought to have been born during a thunder storm at the start of June. We have named him Duma (Zulu for thunder).
Breeding season certainly seems to have arrived: Grimacing male giraffe smell for pheromones, and the black rhino, too, are puffing and snorting, providing spectacular territorial displays. One black rhino (Tom) has decided to return to the vicinity of Bush Camp and pays visits to guests enjoying the relaxing outdoor bubble bath. Hence, his name “Peeping Tom”. Perhaps he is expecting many bathing guests at Bush Camp in the near future. If you were planning to join us for the spring baby boom, might I suggest coming a little earlier than planned so as not to miss out. We hope to see you soon.
