Newsletter March 2012

Dear guests and friens,

Autumn is here…our favourite time of the year at White Elephant: tall green bush, beautiful balmy days, silent windless nights, shiny well fed animals, everything so perfect. Sometimes we wish we could push the pause button so everyone could have a chance to experience this special season at White Elephant. It is also the start of rutting season. Rutting provides for spectacular scenes of impala clashing horns and the sound of explosive snorts breaking the quiet of moonlit evenings. Full moon dates are: 6 April and 6 May (peak of impala rut).

Newsletter May 2013
Hello White Elephant Friends
After another wonderful summer with a higher than usual rainfall, the ‘bush pantry’ is full.
Rutting season is in progress, filling the air with the sound of clashing horns and loud snortings. This amazing annual phenomenon will result in a bumper Impala baby boom in late October or early November when the first summer rains fall again.
The crisp windless evenings and clear sunny days, rutting season and the array of nocturnal sounds make May a special time of the year to experience the Zululand bush at White Elephant !

Birding is exceptional this time of the year with an abundance of raptors and water birds along the lake Jozini wetlands.

Newsletter Novermber 2011

Hello White Elephant friends,

As 2011 is nearing the end, herewith a newsletter from a slightly different angle: News about the daily challenges, achievements and events pertaining to not only the lodges but also to our wildlife and the daily conservation challenges.

Although rhino poaching has been in the headlines for a while now, touch wood, we have had no rhino poached but protecting these endangered and rare species from extinction has become a real challenge. We have had two new born black rhino calves this year and incredibly, we have had 57 sightings reported by our guides and guests for October alone. With the continued support of Brothers Safaris, we have also managed to microchip, ear notch and collar one of the sub-adult bulls (born on White Elephant since their re-introduction in 2008 as part of the WWF Black Rhino Range Expansion Project). Thank you Colin, Jackie, Suzan and wildlife vet Dr Peter Brothers for allowing us to action these vital procedures to manage and conserve our black rhino. During this ‘Veterinary Safari’ we also managed to immobilize and re-collar ‘Lucky’, one of the seven vasectomised elephant bulls vasectomised by Disney World’s Elephant Population Management Project team in 2009, who had outgrown his radio collar.

Newsletter March 2011

Hello White Elephant friends,
Do you know that an earthly paradise can really exist? We live in one!
The landscape is unique, the Lebombo mountains ancient and majestic, and lake Jozini beautiful. (And deep. And shimmering. And full of hippo, crocodiles, and tiger fish.) This is a paradise where people live close to nature, sensitive to their environment.

White Elephant in the News

The first time I met the owner of the White Elephant Safari Lodge, Heinz Kohrs, I thought he was a member of staff. A very interesting one, who had gleaned a fair bit of knowledge about the area he was working in.

February Special

It’s time for a bit of spoiling. Join us for a Bushveld break away.

Black Rhino Range Expansion Project

Please see the below newsletter from the WWF/ Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Black Rhino Range Expansion Project, which as you will see, took place in the Pongola Game Reserve, home to White Elephant Safari Lodge and Bush Camp.

One month on, the 13 black rhino released on to Pongola Game Reserve have apparently settled well and are in good condition.
